Questions

Page speed software: FAQs

What is the difference between lab data and field data in a page speed test?

Lab data comes from a simulated load on a set device and connection, so it is repeatable and good for debugging. Field data comes from real visitors, such as the Chrome UX Report, and is what Google uses for Core Web Vitals. Use lab tests to find problems and field data to confirm fixes worked.

Why do I get a different speed score every time I test?

Server response, network conditions, third-party scripts and test location all vary between runs. Run several tests and use the median, or schedule tests in a monitoring tool to see the trend. Focus on the individual metrics such as LCP and INP rather than the overall score.
