Choosing a backlink tool

Backlink tools show which sites link to you and your competitors, how links change over time, and where new link opportunities might be. No tool sees every link on the web, so database size and how often it's refreshed matter most.

Check how quickly new and lost links show up, how it scores site authority, and whether you can export data for outreach and reporting.

Questions to ask

  • How big is the link index, and how often is it refreshed?
  • How quickly do new links show up?
  • How is authority scored?
  • Can we export data for outreach?
Questions

Backlink software: FAQs

Why do backlink tools report different numbers for the same site?

Each tool runs its own crawler, so they discover different links and drop dead ones at different speeds. None of them sees the full picture Google has. Pick one tool as your source of truth for trends and use a second for spot checks.

Is a free backlink checker enough for a link audit?

Free versions usually show only a sample of links, which is fine for a quick look at a competitor. A proper audit needs the full export, history of lost and new links, and anchor text data. Combine a paid tool with the links report in Google Search Console for the most complete view.

How many backlink tools are listed?

None yet. The directory is growing, and vendors can list their tools with a Business account.
